FAQ's

Below are some of the most commonly asked questions [and their answers] raised to our Biofuels Team:

How are wood pellets made?

Wood pellets are produced by compressing the wood / timber material which has first passed through a hammer mill to provide a uniform dough-like mass. This mass is fed to a press where it is squeezed through a die having holes of the size required (normally 6 mm diameter, sometimes 8 mm or larger). The high pressure of the press causes the temperature of the wood to increase greatly, and the lignin plastifies slightly forming a natural 'glue' that holds the pellet together as it cools - please click here for more info

Which quality standard do your wood pellets conform to?
All of our pellets are produced from virgin timber and conform to the following recognised industry standards:

CEN / TS 14961 (A1), ONORM, DIN + and EN plus.

Where are your wood pellets produced?
Our wood pellets are currently produced in England, Wales & Scotland.

How long do the wood pellets last in storage (shelf life)?
Wood pellets should last indefinitely in storage provided they are kept free from contamination and away from moisture.

Which areas do you deliver to?
We can deliver bagged wood pellets throughout the UK for similar prices. Bulk blown wood pellets are also available in England, Wales & Scotland; however it is currently most cost effective for customers in southern Scotland, the north of England, and the central England. We are looking at new wood pellet depots in the south of england to ensure that quality fuel can be accessed by customers there too.

Is there a minimum order quantity?
For bagged wood pellets the minimum order is 1 tonne, and for bulk blown the minimum order is 2 tonnes.

What size are your wood pellets?
Wood pellets are available either in 6mm or 8mm formats.

What is the price per tonne for wood pellets?
This depends. The price of wood pellets varies depending on the quantity that you require and the distance in miles that our vehicles have to travel. The cheapest prices are available for larger deliveries as the transport costs are shared across a larger tonnage. We always try to reduce costs to our customers by combining deliveries and building in efficiencies. Please contact us for a quotation.

How much ash is produced from wood pellets?
Generally the percentage of ash produced as a proportion of weight is very low at around 0.3-0.5%.

How are wood pellets delivered?
Wood pellets can be delivered in bulk by one of our vehicles blowing the fuel into your store / hopper, or we can deliver 1 tonne bags or smaller bags on a curtain sided vehicle. We are able to send pallet trucks with curtain siders to aide you in unloading the bags.

What is the VAT rate for wood pellets?
Vat rates vary from the standard VAT to reduced VAT. For domestic fuel customers or those with a qualifying purpose the VAT rate is currently 5%, and for businesses it is 20%. Please note this is correct as of 17/03/2011.

How far do you blow the wood pellets?
We can blow the pellets as far as 20 meters, however this is not recommended. The further that the vehicle has to blow the more pressure that has to be exerted on the pellets. This means there is likely to be more degradation. We would usually recommend less than 12 meters, but shorter is better.

How long does it take to deliver from order?
For bagged pellets we are able to deliver within 3 working days of order confirmation, and a next day service is available at a premium. For bulk blown pellets we require 2 working days' notice - Order day one for delivery day 3.

What methods of payment do you accept?
We accept payments by bacs, cheque, and credit card.
